Journal Entry:
We arrived at the site in the afternoon and while the skies were clear, a storm was building up around us. We could only go into structure 9 at a time. While part of our tour went in, I spent time wandering around the outside. I had no idea it was going to be so big! I spent time touching the kerbstones and feeling the spiral patterns on them. I could just imagine the ancient peoples of Ireland sitting there hammering in the designs. When it was my turn to go inside, I went last so that I could take a bit more time to slow my steps, to breath deeply the scent of the passageway, to run my hands along the stones. I wanted to commit as much of the experience to memory as I could. Once inside the inner chamber, I took more time to feel the carving inside, to feel the smoothness of the basin stone, and get a sense of the energy. The guide showed us a simulation of what it would be like to be there on the Winter Solstice with the light coming in. My sense of the place is that it was not only used for the dead but also possibly births and a place of meditation. I could feel energy spiraling upwards within the structure. I had a lot of experience in Ireland but visiting this site was probably one of the most powerful.
